[xmlsec] The borders of the content in an xml-file as source to make digest and signature

Where does xmlsec1 take its source from when DigestValue and
SignatureValue is calculated? 
Is it from the whole template file a part of it? 
Can the borders be exactly determined, or is the digest and signature
calculated in a completely different way and complicated compared to
f.ex. "openssl dgst" and "openssl -sign" ?
