Just for the record: OpenSSL has a way of using "crypto engines" to do 
the actual crypto work
and it can be used with hardware aceclerators, smartcards, etc.  Also 
there are add-on libraries
that provide crypto keys storage for OpenSSL. See "Related Apps" page on 
openssl.org for details.
